What are MAR'S opening hours?

The museum's box office is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm. Visitation to the exhibitions is from 10 am to 6 pm. The exhibition hall starts being prepared for closure at 5:45 pm. You can enter the exhibition hall until 5:15 pm.

How much is admission?

Admission is R$20.00 (full price) and R$10.00 (half price).   Admission is free to everyone on Tuesdays. Check out our policy on free admission at

What exhibitions are on display?

Can I hold an event at MAR? How can I lease space at it?

Museu de Arte do Rio has a few areas where events can be held: pointview (capacity: 200 people), 5th floor (capacity: 150 people), auditorium (capacity: 97 people), varanda (capacity: 60 people). For more information send an e-mail to


How can I schedule a visit?

At MAR, educational programs are organized in mediated visits to the exhibitions and are free of charge for public school and half price for private school students. Educational visits are also offered to groups, social organizations, and interested parties in general.

Visits last an hour and a half and are held from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Groups are limited to 40 people.

Does MAR have wheelchairs and strollers available?

There are three wheelchairs and three strollers available for visitors. If you need one, simply ask for it at the museum's box office.

How can I enroll for courses offered by the Escola do Olhar? Is there any tuition for them?

Courses currently offered by the Escola do Olhar are free of charge. Check out MAR'S schedule for the courses that are offered. You can enroll using specific forms available on each course's page. Passwords are occasionally distributed in advance at the museum's box office to those interested in participating.

May I enter the exhibition hall with a bag or a backpack?

You may visit the exhibitions carrying items smaller than 35 cm. MAR has lockers where you can leave belongings in excess of this size. This measure is taken to prevent large bags and backpacks from damaging any work.

Where can I eat a snack at the Museum?

The Museum's open spaces are available for use as snack areas. Visitors should store jars and bottles containing liquids in the lockers before the entering the exhibition space. MAR provides drinking water fountains and restrooms in the halls of all Exhibition Hall floors and at the Escola do Olhar. We also have Café Cristóvão and the Mauá Restaurant for those who would like to have a meal while at the museum.

May I take photos at the exhibits?

Visitors may photograph most of the works provided they do not use a flash. However, some works and parts of the exhibition space cannot be photographed due to internal Museum rules. Be aware of the signs to know what you may or not shoot. Monitors are prepared to advise which works cannot be photographed.

May I use a mobile phone while I'm in the exhibition hall?

Mobile phones and communication radios may only be used in the hallways on each floor and in the Museum's external areas. These devices may not be used in the galleries - even in the silent mode - in order to ensure the contemplation of works and coexistence in the exhibition space.

Are animals allowed into the Museum?

Only eye seeing dogs accompanied by their owners may circulate in the Escola do Olhar areas and in the Exhibition Hall.

May I touch the works?

Works in exhibition may not be touched. Human skin accumulates residues that can damage works of art if handled. There will be clear signage for works for which interaction is allowed. Monitors can also assist you by pointing out what can be touched.

Is Wi-Fi Internet available at MAR?

MAR has an open Wi-Fi network available in the Exhibition Hall. The network is closed in the Escola do Olhar. If you are attending a course or event at the school, monitors may provide you with the password.

Can I rest between exhibitions?

There are benches available to rest on on each floor of the Exhibition Hall. Ask a monitor for assistance if you need to stop and rest between one floor and another.

How do the visits to the Port Region departing from MAR work?

Educational visits to the Rio de Janeiro Port Region are offered by Porto Maravilha Cultural. The tour is free of charge and takes interested parties to historical and cultural sites surrounding the museum.
